@ Aaryan Morrison.
My parents support me a lot and they always encourage me to do the things that I love.
However, the most significant and beneficial way they support me is they always allow me and encourage me to talk to them when I have a problem.
My parents give me a lot of freedom. It is the most important part as a student in the United States.
You have lots of freedom to choose the things that interest us.
In that way we can find the things which we are passionate with.
We have a good idea of the directions we want to take our lives.
My parents also encourage me to be really good at time management.
They bought me my first planner and I kept purchasing my planner myself, so I can plan out the things that I have to do every week and make sure I manage my time accordingly.
So independence is really important as we have the power to choose and our parents aren’t making decisions for us.
First we learn to make decisions for ourselves. We learn to consider who we are and what we want for ourselves and then make decisions accordingly.
Being independent in high schools at our age also prepares us for college because at college, we leave home, we go far away and we are on our own. We don’t have anybody looking after us the same way as our parents.
So my parents give me a lot of independence and help to teach me how to be independent, and they are always there watching us learn and grow.

@ Abney
Well, my parents always offered me verbal encouragement to be successful by saying “if you take advantage of all of your skills, you can truly achieve these great things”.
My parents never really incentivize me with rewards for good behaviors. They kind of expected that after I did well in school in early stages.

@ Aaryan Morrison.
It is pretty important to be independent in a US high school.
US high schools, especially my high school, are very very large. So we have lots more students and teachers.
Teachers and counselors are always there and ready for us if we have questions, but lots of the times, it is important that we know what we are doing and how to do things because there is not always someone there to help us, just because of the large amounts of students that exist.

@ Abney
Independence is very important in my own life. And it has been really developed by being able to make my own choices. My parents will always encourage me to become involved and to take the classes I like. They left the choices up to me.
After I made those choices, of course, I would have to follow through with them. So, I gain the maturity, and responsibility by knowing what I chose to do and how I needed to continue with it.

@ Aaryan Morrison.
I decided to apply for Harvard at the beginning of my junior year, my G11 year.
In my junior year, I began to study for my college entrance exams like ACT and SAT.
I knew I wanted to try to get my best scores during my junior year, so I didn’t have to worry about them in my senior year when I had lots more responsibilities.
So I studied in August, September, October and November, and I took the college entrance exams in December.
Luckily, I was very happy with my scores. So I finished my test preparation in my junior year.

@ Abney
I believe I decided to apply Harvard at the end of my sophomore year. That’s when I was looking into colleges more seriously, and investigating which would provide me with the best opportunities to do what I want to do in the future.

@ Aaryan Morrison.
For me and for lots of students in the US, it’s really really important that we do extra-curricular activities.
They not only are appealing when you talk to colleges like Harvard or any others in the Ivy League,
but they also help you forage lots of different skills for yourself you cannot find in the classroom.
They help you become a leader. They help you become engaged with your community.
And they help you with your team work skills.
So in this way, you build valuable skills like communication, critical thinking and problem solving.
That can help you in your daily life and in the real world.

@ Abney
I began by investigating all my options because there are so many, but as time passed, I narrowed my commitments, so that way I could become more committed and selected a few activities.
For instance, at the end of my high school career, I was swimming team captain and president of My Local Chapter Future Business Leadership of America.
Having few, but very involved commitments were much more impactful than having a wide range while I wouldn’t be able to commit myself very much.

@ Aaryan Morrison.
Each night, I typically have anywhere from one hour to three hours of homework.
Usually I complete these hours of homework before I had my dance class at about 6:30pm.
So in the time from after school at 2:30 to 6:30 when I go to my dance class, I am working on my homework or studying.
I am always trying to get between 6 and 7 hours of sleep at night. It’s really really important that you stay healthy and sleep a lot because your schedule gets so busy.

@ Abney
I adopted a much better time management skills. I set a routine for myself that included both my study time and extra-curricular involvement.
Everyday after returning home after school, I swim for about two hours a day. After that I usually do 1 to 3 hours of homework and study at night. So in that way I would be well-rounded and show that I could succeed in both extra-curriculars and academics.

@ Aaryan Morrison.
One of the values and the skills that interviewers are looking for might be an ease of speaking. They want to know that the students they are admitting are not highly academic robots. They want to see that you have a personality, that you have the ideas of your own, and that you can express your ideas.
They also want to know that you can think on your feet. For example, in my interview, I was asked about absolute truth, and my interviewer and I had a pretty extensive discussion of the topic. She reminded that there was no wrong answer and she just wanted to hear my ideas.
So they want to see that you are confident in expressing your own ideas, and you are comfortable talking about the ideas that are pretty absolute.

@ Abney
The interview, in my opinion, was mainly focused on self-expression. The interviewers wanted to see that we could think, speak independently, and develop our own ideas.
They wanted to see a positive personality in my opinion, but also extra-curricular involvement. They didn’t want someone who is only smart in the classroom, but couldn’t succeed in anywhere else.
They wanted someone who could devote themselves to the school, what they love, and to the community.

@ Aaryan Morrison.
My suggestion to the students who are going to study at Kokomo would be to use your resources once you are there. It’s very common for both local and international students to ask for help. So don’t be afraid to ask for help.
It’s a very new environment and a very different education system, but there are plenty of teachers, counselors, even fellow students that are willing to help you and want you to make the most of your experience with them.
For those students that attend Kokomo High School and will continue on and want to apply for top-tier universities, make sure you get involved, make sure that you take rigorous classes, that you ask teachers for help in those rigorous classes, so you could be successful,
but also that you do adequate research about extra-curricular opportunities so you know you can do things about what you are interested in and the things that will make you more engaged with your high school experience in the U.S. because that will show through when you write your application essay.

@ Abney
I think success at Kokomo High School required a little bit of confidence. Quite a few of the times, you need to put yourself out there in an unknown situation. Maybe the one you never experience before.
In order to be successful in that, you need to tell yourself that you will be all right in the end if you just take the opportunity.

@ Aaryan Morrison.
Hi, everybody. My wish to you is that you enjoy your time in high school no matter if you decide to come to Kokomo High School or if you finish your education in China. This should be one of your best times of your life.
You should learn about yourself while you study hard, and push yourself to new limits.
Make sure you are always challenging yourself, but you are always thinking about the bigger contexts of these challenges.
They should make you a well-rounded individual that has the appreciation for learning both in the classroom and in your everyday life.
I wish you the best in your process.

@ Abney
As you approach the increasing opportunities like I had, you may encounter some very difficult times. Challenge is a part of life. And sometimes failure is as well. We can’t all succeed in everything we set out to do, but that’s OK. I urge you not to be discouraged as discouragement prevents us from truly achieving all we want
